Member of Parliament sentenced to 9 years for a $210,000 bribe

September 11 the High Anti-Corruption Court sentenced a People’s Deputy from the “Servant of the People” party, Oleksandr Yurchenko, to 9 years imprisonment in a bribery case. The verdict was reported by the Anti-Corruption Center.

The court also banned Yurchenko from holding certain positions for 3 years and ordered the confiscation of his property.

As stated in the indictment, the deputy covertly asked to have money passed to him through his assistant Ivan Fishchenko. It concerned $10,000 for the MP himself and another $200,000 for committee members.

According to the prosecution, the funds were to be handed over in exchange for adopting legislative amendments in the interest of a foreign company.

The case has been under consideration since 2021. In 2024, because one of the judges was replaced, the proceedings had to start over.

The Anti-Corruption Center noted that Oleksandr Yurchenko became the third incumbent People’s Deputy to be sentenced to actual imprisonment. Earlier, deputy Andriy Hunka was sentenced to 4 years imprisonment, and deputy Lyudmyla Marchenko to 2 years.

The verdict can be appealed to an appellate court.
