The water at the "Chaika" beach passed microbial testing, but there are worrying readings across the region
A 1.3-fold exceedance of chemical oxygen demand, an indicator of pollution, was recorded at the city beach in Pivdennoukrainsk
Specialists of the state institution “Mykolaiv Regional Center for Disease Control and Prevention of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine” published the results of monitoring of water quality at official bathing and recreation sites in Mykolaiv Oblast. Water samples were taken on May 25 as part of the recreational season.
For residents of the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv the main news concerns the beach “Chaika”: by microbiological indicators the water there meets the standards. In other words, laboratory tests did not record dangerous microbiological contamination at this location.
The monitoring covered stretches of the rivers Inhul and Southern Bug, as well as the water areas of the Buzky and Tyligul estuaries within the official beaches and recreation zones of the region.
The following meet microbiological standards:
- the beach “Strilka” in Mykolaiv;
- the beach “Raiduga” in Pervomaisk;
- the city beach in Pivdennoukrainsk;
- the beach “Chaika” and the recreation area “Namiv” in Mykolaiv;
- a recreation area in Kobleve on the Tyligul estuary.
However, the situation with the water cannot be called completely calm. Specialists recorded deviations in certain physico-chemical characteristics. In particular, there were exceedances of the standards for dry residue (total dissolved solids), iron content, chlorides and the pH level.
In most cases, according to specialists, such deviations may be related to the natural features of the specific water bodies.
Special attention was paid to the chemical oxygen demand indicator. It shows the level of organic pollution in the water. Over the past week this indicator exceeded the limit values at two locations: by 1.3 times — at the city beach in Pivdennoukrainsk, and by 12 times — at the beach “Strilka” in Mykolaiv.
At the same time, regarding the beach “Chaika” this report refers specifically to the water’s compliance with microbiological standards. For the Korabelnyi district this is important, as this location traditionally remains one of the most popular places for waterside recreation.
Specialists emphasize that water quality can change quickly. Indicators are influenced by precipitation, wind, air temperature and other weather conditions. Therefore, even after normal test results the situation requires ongoing monitoring.
