Mykolaiv’s water supply will be chlorinated: raw water will not be safe to drink
The duration of disinfection will be determined based on water sample results
Starting November 2, water pipes in Mykolaiv will undergo preventive chlorine disinfection. The work will be carried out by Mykolaivvodokanal Municipal Enterprise to protect the water from harmful bacteria and microbes and make it safe for residents.
The utility explained that water quality at the treatment plant meets established standards. However, the city’s underground pipelines stretch for more than 1,200 km. As water travels through them to homes, its quality deteriorates at monitoring points. That is why the networks need thorough disinfection.
Residents were advised to follow these rules while the pipes are being flushed:
- A noticeable smell of chlorine during the procedure is normal.
- Drinking tap water untreated or using it to prepare food is strictly prohibited.
- For household use, first collect the water in an open container and let it stand for at least 3–4 hours so the chlorine can dissipate. Use it only afterward.
- The water can be used for laundry, cleaning, washing dishes, and flushing toilets.
The duration of chlorination will be determined based on water samples taken at the city’s monitoring points. Residents will be notified on social media when the procedure is complete.
Meanwhile, free water stations where residents can collect purified water remain available in Mykolaiv.
