The car of an Odesa woman was seized; her husband faces up to five years in prison
A 24-year-old resident of Mykolaiv Oblast has been notified of suspicion of illegally taking possession of a vehicle. According to the circumstances established during the investigation, he took a VAZ car from an acquaintance in Odesa, but instead of returning it, traded it for a Chevrolet and received additional money.
The car’s owner, a 20-year-old woman from Odesa, lent her acquaintance a vehicle worth nearly 79,000 hryvnias. The man explained that he needed it for a week to take care of personal matters in Vinnytsia Oblast. When the agreed period had passed, he did not return the car and stopped answering phone calls. The woman tried to recover her property herself, but without success, so she contacted the police.
Police established that the man had never intended to return someone else’s car. On a popular classifieds website, he found a car reseller and arranged a trade.
The exchange took place in Cherkasy Oblast. After handing over his acquaintance’s car, the man received another vehicle and additional cash, then headed to Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
Officers from the local police unit, together with staff from the Criminal Investigation Department of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Odesa Oblast, tracked down the Odesa woman’s car and seized it. The suspect’s whereabouts were also established.
Investigators notified the man of suspicion under Part 1 of Article 289 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — illegal taking of possession of a vehicle. The penalty provided for by this article is 3 to 5 years of imprisonment. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, and law enforcement officers are establishing all the circumstances of the incident.
