Stepfather raped his stepdaughter with a mental illness: he was sentenced to 8 years in prison
After the verdict was handed down, the man attempted to injure himself in court
A court in Kyiv found a 50-year-old man guilty of raping his 22-year-old stepdaughter, who has a mental illness, and sentenced him to 8 years in prison. The Kyiv City Prosecutor’s Office reported the verdict.
The man was detained in August 2024 when the woman’s pregnancy became known. She has had a mental illness since birth and perceives reality at the level of a child approximately from 5 to 10 years old. Her mother is her guardian and left the daughter under the man’s supervision.
According to the prosecutor’s office, the stepfather took advantage of the stepdaughter’s helpless state and engaged in sexual relations with her. The mother learned about her daughter’s pregnancy during a gynecologist visit. A few months later the woman gave birth to a baby girl.
An examination confirmed that the child’s biological father is the woman’s stepfather. He had been living with the family since 2019.
During the trial the man did not plead guilty. He insisted that the stepdaughter allegedly consented to sexual relations and claimed they had a romantic relationship. Witnesses, however, confirmed that due to her mental condition the woman’s developmental level corresponds to that of a child.
The prosecutor sought the maximum possible sentence — 10 years imprisonment. The court sentenced the man to 8 years in prison.
After the verdict was announced the convict attempted to injure himself in the abdomen with an object resembling a knife that he had brought to court. The injury was not life-threatening, so hospitalization was not required. The man was taken into custody directly in the courtroom.
The family did not take the newborn girl. The child was placed for adoption.
