2 November left a noticeable mark in the history of Mykolaiv and the Korabelnyi district. This date recalls old Mykolaiv shipbuilding, the difficult fate of the city’s plants, people’s struggle for earned wages, sporting victories and Russian shelling of communities neighboring the district.
2 November 1821 (old style): a 44-gun frigate was launched in Mykolaiv
At the Mykolaiv Admiralty a 44-gun frigate “Pospeshny” was launched, which was built by shipwright Andriy Ivanovych Melikhov. There is an important calendar clarification: the date 2 November 1821 is given according to the Julian calendar, so in the modern Gregorian calendar it is 14 November 1821.
2 November 1918: German shipbuilders left Mykolaiv, and the plants’ restart was postponed
The newspaper “Yuzhnoye Slovo” that day reported the departure from Mykolaiv of representatives of the German shipbuilding company “Blohm und Voss”. The government of the Ukrainian State did not grant the company the rights to complete ships laid on Mykolaiv’s slips before the revolution, and the resumption of the shipbuilding plants’ work was postponed due to lack of funds.
2 November 2012: the picket at “Okean” ended with wage payments
In the evening near the main gate of the “Okean” plant, guards who were demanding their earned money were paid wages for September and October. As participants of the protest said, representatives of the security company arrived at the enterprise at about 21:00 and settled payments with the people.
2 November 2019: athletes from the Korabelnyi district won 14 gold medals
At the WAKO kickboxing championship of Kherson region in Kakhovka, trainees of the Mykolaiv youth sports school DYuSK “Konglomerat” from the Korabelnyi district won 14 gold, 8 silver and 7 bronze medals.
2 November 2020: “Okean” received the bulk carrier RUBUS into dry dock
The floating dock of the shipbuilding plant “Okean” received the bulk carrier RUBUS for intermediate repairs, which were planned to be completed in approximately 30 days. For the contract, according to the company, “Okean” was competing with 5 other ship repair enterprises.
2 November 2023: Russian shelling damaged the power grid in Lymany
At about 05:00 Russian forces shelled the village of Lymany in the Halytsynivska community, located near the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv. As a result of the attack the power grid was damaged; according to regional authorities, there were no civilian casualties.
2 November 1938: Zakarpattia lost Uzhhorod, Mukachevo and Berehove
By the decision of the First Vienna Award, Czechoslovakia was forced to cede to Hungary the southern districts of autonomous Slovakia and Subcarpathian Rus. The Ukrainian Institute of National Remembrance notes that Zakarpattia lost over 12% of its territory, including Uzhhorod, Mukachevo and Berehove, and the autonomous government moved to Khust.
2 November 2000: continuous human presence on the ISS began
The first long-duration expedition arrived at the International Space Station. NASA reminds that the crew consisted of astronaut William Shepherd and cosmonauts Sergei Krikalev and Yuri Gidzenko. It is from 2 November 2000 that the continuous human presence on the ISS is counted.
That was 2 November for Mykolaiv and the Korabelnyi district: from old admiralty slips and shipbuilding plant problems to the struggle for wages, sporting gold and the wartime realities of the 21st century.
