A serviceman was convicted for manufacturing an explosive device and a terrorist attack in Zhytomyr region, which resulted in the death of another serviceman. The punishment is 13 years imprisonment with confiscation of all his property. This was reported on October 1 by the Office of the Prosecutor General. According to gp.gov.ua.

According to the prosecution, in September 2025 the man voluntarily left the military unit and began looking in Telegram for “easy earnings”. Through the messenger he contacted a representative of the the Russian Federation and agreed to carry out his tasks for money.

The investigation established that on the instructions of a handler the serviceman rented an apartment in Zhytomyr, purchased the necessary components, and made the explosive device himself. He attached a mobile phone to it so the explosive could be detonated remotely.

September 14 the man transported the device by taxi to one of the settlements in the region. He set up the cache in a ravine on the cemetery grounds, hiding the explosive among the trash. On a nearby tree he secured yet one phone with a remote video-monitoring app. As the prosecutor’s office explained, thanks to this the handler from the Russian Federation could observe the location and activate the device at the desired moment.

That same day another serviceman approached the cache. It was at that moment that the explosive device was remotely detonated. The serviceman died, and the man who had made and hidden the device was detained.

The court found him guilty of a terrorist act that caused a person’s death, as well as of illegal manufacture and possession of an explosive device. Until the verdict takes legal effect, the convict will remain in custody.
