September 28 in the history of the Korabelnyi District and Mykolaiv combined shipbuilding, workers’ fights for wages and a return to the ancient history of Vitovka. That day at the “Okean” plant workers refused to start their shift, Mykolaiv shipbuilders launched a vessel for a foreign customer, and in Korabelnyi a new symbol of historic Vitovka was presented.
September 28, 2012: “Okean” workers refused to start the shift
Due to problems with wage payments, workers from the 11th hull-section shop and the 12th slipway shop of the “Okean” plant in Mykolaiv gathered in the shop at 7:30 and did not start work. As reported Korabelov.info, the day before workers had been paid only 20% of their August wages, and from October 1 a three-day work week was planned for part of the staff. After a promise of a meeting with management after 9:00, people returned to work, and in the evening they were paid another 9% of the debt.
September 28, 2007: “SILVES” was launched in Mykolaiv
At the state shipbuilding plant named after the 61 Communar in Mykolaiv, the hull of the vessel “SILVES”, which was being built for the Spanish company Factoria Naval de Marin, was launched. UNIAN documented the ceremony and noted the ship’s dimensions — 90 by 14 meters. It was another chapter of Mykolaiv’s international shipbuilding, when the products of local shipbuilders were destined for foreign customers.
September 28, 2024: the hymn of Vitovka was presented in Korabelnyi
At Branch Library No.18 on Korabeliv Avenue in Mykolaiv, a presentation took place of a hymn created for the 625th anniversary of Vitovka. Korabelov.info reported that the lyrics were written by Hanna Khanovych, and the music was created and performed by Merited Artist of Ukraine Oleksandr Sychov. The event also showed a video clip with views of the Bogoyavlensky Spring, the Church of the Holy Spirit and other historic sites of the Korabelnyi District.

September 28, 2025 Ukraine experienced one of the large-scale Russian air attacks: the President of Ukraine reported over 500 drones, of which about 350 were “Shaheds”, and 48 missiles; 4 people were killed, including a child, and more than 80 people were injured. And on September 28, 1994 the passenger ferry “Estonia”, en route from Tallinn to Stockholm, sank in the Baltic Sea: the official investigation recorded 989 people on board, of whom 137 were rescued and 852 died.
For the Korabelnyi District this date is especially symbolic: from the hard struggle of “Okean” shipbuilders for their earned money to the appearance of Vitovka’s own hymn. And the story of the launch of “SILVES” recalls the times when Mykolaiv regularly built ships for clients from other countries.
