11 August in the history of the Korabelnyi District and Mykolaiv combined shipbuilding, remembrance of a defender, and wartime events. In different years on this day large vessels were launched here, the city said farewell to a marine from Balabanivka, and after Russian shelling houses and forests burned.

11 August 1990: in Mykolaiv a cruiser was launched, later named “Ukraine”

At the 61 Communar shipyard in Mykolaiv the fourth missile cruiser of Project 1164 “Atlant” was launched; at that time it bore the name “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Lobov”. In 1993 the ship was transferred to Ukraine and later received the name “Ukraine”, but it remained unfinished.

11 August 2009: the first NIBULON barge was launched at “Okean”

At the “Wadan Yards Okean” shipyard in Mykolaiv the first barge “NIBULON-001” was ceremonially launched into the water. It became the first vessel in a series the company built to create NIBULON’s own fleet: in 2009 the parties signed contracts to build the first 16 non-self-propelled vessels.

11 August 2016: Mykolaiv said farewell to a marine from Balabanivka

On that day Mykolaiv bid farewell to a serviceman of the 36th Separate Marine Brigade, Balabanivka resident Serhiy Serhiyovych Prostyakov. While carrying out a combat mission near Shyrokyne on 3 August 2016 he suffered severe injuries and died in hospital on 8 August. Later a memorial plaque was installed on the building of Gymnasium No.49, where he had studied.

11 August 2022: a house burned in Korabelnyi and 20 hectares of forest

Due to Russian shelling in the Korabelnyi District of Mykolaiv a residential house caught fire: the call to rescuers came at 08:19, the fire covering 40 m² was extinguished at 08:48, and there were no casualties. As Korablev.Info reported, the enemy also shelled forest areas three times, including the Balabanivka and Halytsynivka tracts: in total 20 hectares of forest were destroyed by fire.

This day in Ukraine and the world

On 11 August 1992 the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine adopted Resolution No.461 on the financial support of a Ukrainian battalion sent to the United Nations Peacekeeping Forces. And on 11 August 1999 a total solar eclipse occurred, which NASA calls the last total solar eclipse of the 20th century and the second millennium.

Thus 11 August became a date for Mykolaiv that highlights a stark contrast in the city’s history: from the launching of a cruiser and new vessels at “Okean” to the losses of defenders and fires brought by the Russian war.
