1 October left a noticeable mark in the history of Mykolaiv and the Korabelny District: on this day the system for training shipbuilders changed, an unfinished missile cruiser was handed over to Ukraine, the “Okean” shipyard cut the work week due to financial problems, and during the full-scale war a Russian missile hit a residential building.
1 October 1882 old style: a daily newspaper began to be published in Mykolaiv
In Mykolaiv the “Nikolaevsky listok obyavleniy” under the editorship of Vasyl Andriyovych Datsenko began to be published. The newspaper printed city announcements, economic news, court chronicle, reports on events, theatre and music. An important clarification: the Russian Empire used the Julian calendar then, so 1 October 1882 old style corresponds to 13 October 1882 in the modern calendar.
1 October 1929: a new stage in the training of Mykolaiv shipbuilders
The State Archive of Mykolaiv Oblast confirms that on 1 October 1929 the Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Technical School was merged with the Mykolaiv Evening Workers’ Technical School and the institution was given the name Mykolaiv Mechanical Engineering Institute. Already from 1 May 1930 it was reorganized into the Mykolaiv Shipbuilding Institute — one of the key stages in the formation of the modern NUK.
1 October 1993: an unfinished cruiser was handed over to Ukraine
The missile cruiser “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Lobov”, which was being built at the Mykolaiv shipyard, was transferred to the Naval Forces of Ukraine at about 75% completion. The ship officially received the name “Ukraine” on 17 December 1993. At the end of 1994 completion work was stopped due to lack of funds.
1 October 2012: “Okean” switched to a 3-day work week
At the “Okean” shipyard in the Korabelny District from 1 October 2012 a 3-day work week was introduced for the coming quarter, wrote Korabelov.info. Management explained the decision by a lack of funds to pay wages. Workers involved in the repair of 2 ships continued to work 5 days a week.
1 October 2022: an S-300 destroyed apartments in a five-story building, a young woman was killed
On the night of 1 October 2022 Russian forces attacked Mykolaiv twice: after midnight with kamikaze drones, and at about 4:00 with S-300 missiles. In the Central District one of the missiles hit a five-story residential building: it completely destroyed 3 apartments on the fifth floor and 1 apartment on the fourth. During search and rescue operations the body of a woman born in 1993 was found. In total that day the city suffered damage to 11 apartment buildings and 11 private houses, and among the injured were 2 children.
1 October 2022: Korabelov.info showed the consequences of the strike on the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant
That same day Korabelov.info published photos and videos of the consequences of the Russian shelling of the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant, carried out on 30 September 2022. The administrative building, canteen and medical unit at the plant were damaged. The material did not report any killed or wounded.
1 October 2024: a triple celebration in the churches of the Korabelny District
Korabelov.info visited the Holy Spirit Church on Torhova Street and the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Balabanivka, where they celebrated the Feast of the Intercession of the Holy Virgin (Pokrova), Defender’s Day of Ukraine and the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks.

Since 2023 Defender’s Day of Ukraine and the Day of Ukrainian Cossacks in Ukraine have been celebrated on 1 October — the date was moved from 14 October. And on 1 October 1946 in Nuremberg the International Military Tribunal announced verdicts for the main Nazi war criminals: 19 defendants were found guilty, 3 were acquitted, 12 were sentenced to death.
