Shot instructors at the training ground: serviceman sentenced to life imprisonment

A serviceman was sentenced to life imprisonment for the shooting of two instructors at a training range and the attempted murder of another serviceman.

On 13 June 2026, the Office of the Prosecutor General reported this.

Following public prosecution by prosecutors of the Chernihiv Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in the field of defense of the Central Region, the court found the serviceman guilty of the intentional murder of two instructors and the attempted murder of another.

Prosecutors proved that in July 2025, while undergoing basic general military training at one of the training centers in the Chernihiv region, the man decided to take revenge on the instructors. According to the prosecution, the reason was their strictness regarding discipline and the training process.

During live-fire training at the range, the serviceman opened aimed fire at three instructors. Two of the servicemen were killed on the spot from their injuries.

Another instructor survived thanks to a bulletproof vest that stopped the bullet.

The accused’s further actions were stopped by other servicemen. After that, law enforcement officers detained the man.

For the case, forensic psychiatric examinations were conducted. They confirmed the accused’s sanity and his ability to understand his actions and control them.

By the verdict of the Chernihiv District Court of Chernihiv Oblast dated 9 June 2026, the serviceman was found guilty under para. 1, 8 of Part 2 of Art. 115, Part 2 of Art. 15, para. 1, 8 of Part 2 of Art. 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.
