Germany extradites border guard to Ukraine in military serviceman’s murder case

The suspect is in custody and faces up to 15 years in prison

Germany has extradited to Ukraine a border guard inspector suspected of the intentional murder of a serviceman during an attempt to illegally cross the border into Moldova. After the extradition procedure was completed, the man was handed over to officers of the State Bureau of Investigation (SBI). The court ordered him held in custody.

The case concerns events in July 2024 in Odesa region. According to investigators, four servicemen had left their military unit without authorization and were attempting to illegally enter Moldova. During the pursuit, the border guard inspector fired twice at one of the men. The serviceman died at the scene from his injuries.

Investigators say that, when the weapon was used, the serviceman posed no threat to the border guard’s life or health. The suspect initially claimed that the deceased man had attacked him and said he had fired in self-defense. However, forensic examinations did not support this account.

After the shooting, the border guard illegally left Ukraine, using his knowledge of the border area. The SBI placed him on an international wanted list. In early 2026, he was detained by law enforcement officers in Germany.

The border guard has been notified that he is suspected of offenses under the following articles of the Criminal Code of Ukraine:

intentional murder — Part 1 of Article 115;
exceeding authority or official powers by a law enforcement officer, resulting in grave consequences — Part 3 of Article 365.

The suspect faces up to 15 years in prison. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing, with procedural supervision provided by the Odesa Specialized Prosecutor’s Office in the Field of Defense of the Southern Region.
