Even 90% of downed targets do not guarantee safety: Kim explained the risks for civilians

The head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration Vitaliy Kim highly praised the work of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, which defend the Mykolaiv region daily from Russian aerial attacks.

He said this on the air of the telemarathon “United News”, commenting on another attack by strike drones on the Mykolaiv region.

According to the regional head, Ukrainian troops demonstrate a very high level of effectiveness in countering enemy targets. During one of the latest attacks the Defense Forces destroyed 14 Shahed-type drones. Overall, as Vitaliy Kim noted, the air target shoot-down rate is approximately 88%.

The head of the Mykolaiv RMA Vitaliy Kim emphasized that for the military such a result is an exceptionally high indicator of air defense performance.

“For the military, shooting down 90% of targets is a very good indicator. The Defense Forces are working very effectively. More effectively than anywhere else”, — the head of the RMA emphasized.

Vitaliy Kim also noted that over the years of the full-scale war Ukraine has gained unique experience in countering massive strike drone attacks. According to him, today the country is effectively a world leader in this field.

At the same time, the regional head drew attention to the fact that even a high percentage of destroyed enemy targets does not mean complete safety for civilians. After all, any drone that breaks through the defenses can cause deaths or injuries.

Commenting on the risks to the civilian population, Vitaliy Kim emphasized that military statistics and human tragedy are different things.

“For civilians, even one or two drones that break through the defenses are a tragedy, because people die and are injured”, — he said.

In addition, the head of the RMA said that Russian forces use drones not only for strikes but also for reconnaissance. According to Kim, before the attack “Shaheds” were circling over Mykolaiv, gathering information about the area and facilities.

Separately, Vitaliy Kim explained that in frontline communities located a short distance from the front line, the Russians may use drones with video links that are more difficult to jam with electronic warfare means.

“Over frontline communities located a short distance from the front line, they can use drones on a video link. That is, they see through the camera and this is not jammed by EW. Therefore they have the ability “with a Shahed” to both reconnoiter and strike, so to speak. That is why the “Shaheds” did not immediately go to the target. They circled over the city and were scouting”, – Kim said.

For Mykolaiv and frontline communities in the region, this means that air raid alerts and reports of strike drone movements remain a real threat, even if the Defense Forces destroy most targets. Russian attacks are changing, so residents should not ignore danger signals and should stay in shelters until the all-clear.
