In the evening of June 20, near the signal-controlled intersection of Central Avenue and Defenders of Mykolaiv Street in Mykolaiv, an Audi driven by a 31-year-old man collided with a Citroen C3 driven by a 50-year-old woman.

The Citroen C3 driver died. Two of her 17-year-old daughters, who were passengers in the car, sustained injuries and were hospitalized. Later, one of the girls, who had suffered serious injuries, died in the hospital.

The Audi driver was detained in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. The police reported that he was intoxicated: during procedural actions the man registered 2.51‰.

The next day the detainee was notified of suspicion under Part 4 of Article 286-1 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — for violating traffic safety rules or vehicle operation by a person while intoxicated, which caused the deaths of several people.

Later the court granted the motion of the investigators of the Transport Crimes Investigation Department of the regional police investigative directorate and the prosecutor’s office and placed the 31-year-old driver in custody without the possibility of bail.

The pre-trial investigation has already been completed. The police sent the criminal case to the Mykolaiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office, and the prosecutors forwarded the indictment to the court for consideration on the merits.

The defendant faces up to 12 years of imprisonment, as well as a ban on driving vehicles for a period of 7 to 10 years.

Under Article 62 of the Constitution of Ukraine, a person is presumed innocent until their guilt is proven in accordance with the law and established by a guilty verdict of a court.
