Revenge for a customer: in Mykolaiv, a car carrying merchandise was set on fire

On the morning of July 27 in Mykolaiv, a car caught fire in which the victim had stored goods for sale. Police identified a 76-year-old local resident suspected of arson; the fire damaged the vehicle’s front end.

A report about the Nissan Serena catching fire, parked near the tram tracks at the intersection of Sinnaya and 8th of March streets, was received in the morning by the Mykolaiv District Police Department from a dispatcher of Mykolaivelektrotrans.

Rescuers who extinguished the fire, officers of the district department’s investigative-operational team, and specialists from the forensic laboratory of the Main Directorate of the National Police in Mykolaiv Oblast arrived at the scene.

Law enforcement officers seized burn fragments and the remains of a plastic bottle. Everything seized was sent for expert examination.

During initial investigative and operational-search actions, police established that a 76-year-old local resident who sells goods near the victim may be involved in the arson.

According to the investigation, the day before the sellers had a quarrel over a customer. After the conflict, the man came in the morning to the place where his 74-year-old competitor’s car was parked, poured a flammable liquid over the vehicle and set it on fire.

Investigators, under the procedural guidance of the District Prosecutor’s Office of the city of Mykolaiv, notified the suspect of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — intentional damage to property committed by arson.

The article’s penalty provides for up to 10 years’ imprisonment. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
