Children have nowhere to go: kindergartens in the Korabelnyi district are being closed due to the lack of shelters

At a meeting of the Commission on Health Care and Social Protection of the Population of the Mykolaiv City Council on 28 April 2026, the issue of liquidating three preschool institutions was considered. Some of them are located in the Korabelnyi district.

The discussion concerns kindergartens No. 104, No. 128 and No. 138, which are currently idle. The reason is the lack of shelters and the impossibility of arranging them.

According to the head of the education department Hanna Lychko, the city has 73 kindergartens, of which 44 already operate offline or in a mixed format. These institutions educate 7,830 children.

At the same time, some kindergartens cannot resume operation due to technical limitations. In particular, in the Korabelnyi district the following are proposed for liquidation:

• kindergarten No. 104 (59 Torgova St.) — designed for 31 children, but has no pupils;
• kindergarten No. 138 (Oleh Kravets St., Balabanivka) — capacity 26 children.

In addition, kindergarten No. 128 (62-A Pavla Skoropadskyi St.) is subject to liquidation — designed for 78 children.

All these institutions are located in former residential buildings without basements, which makes it impossible to create even the simplest shelter.

The head of the education department Hanna Lychko explained the situation regarding kindergarten No. 104:

“The institution is idle. There is no basement at all, accordingly, there cannot be even the simplest shelter. The pupils will not come.”

What will happen to the buildings

According to the chair of the commission Hanna Nord, the discussion concerns the liquidation of the institutions themselves, not the buildings:

• the premises will remain community property
• staff and material assets will be redistributed
• options for using the buildings are being considered, including for social needs

As the deputies noted, some buildings have required major repairs since pre-war times. For example, a reconstruction project for kindergarten No. 128 was developed before 2018, but it was never implemented.

The deputies also drew attention to the need for effective use of the property after the institutions are liquidated.
