At Branch No. 2 of City Hospital No. 4 in Mykolaiv, a neurophysiological system “Simplex EEG-25” was installed. It makes it possible to perform prolonged electroencephalography during sleep and will help examine young patients.

Night EEG makes it possible to detect pathological brain activity that may not appear during a short daytime examination. During sleep, brain activity changes, so some disorders, including epileptic activity, become noticeable specifically at this time.

The system records video simultaneously. Thanks to this, doctors can correlate changes on the EEG trace with the patient’s movements, gestures, or twitches.

Night EEG is used for:

  • diagnosis and monitoring of epilepsy, including detection of occult and nocturnal epileptic activity;
  • assessment of the effectiveness of anti-seizure treatment;
  • differentiation between epileptic and non-epileptic conditions, such as panic attacks, night terrors, syncope, and psychogenic seizures;
  • diagnosis of complex sleep disorders — sleepwalking, bruxism, nocturnal enuresis, restless legs syndrome, and periodic limb movements;
  • examination of children with speech and mental developmental delays, a marked loss of acquired skills, and to exclude occult epileptiform activity in cases of hyperactivity, attention deficit, or autistic features.

A standard daytime EEG usually lasts up to 30 minutes, whereas nighttime monitoring covers 8–12 hours and various sleep stages. This increases the likelihood of detecting pathological changes that may remain unnoticed during a short examination.

The new equipment is used for children from 1 month of age. The examination is conducted upon referral from a pediatric neurologist.

The system was purchased thanks to the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) and donors.
