30 July during a session of the Mykolaiv City Council a representative of the parents’ community of the lyceum «Academy of Children’s Creativity» Olena Melnyk appealed to the council members regarding the arrangement of a shelter for the educational institution.

Parents asked to support further consideration of this issue. Currently, during air raid alerts students are forced to walk about 300 meters to the nearest shelter.

At the same time, the premises being considered as a possible option are located much closer to the lyceum. According to the parent community, this will increase children’s safety and create conditions for full in-person learning.

“We earnestly ask you to support this issue. We are terrified for the children, classes are being closed, children are leaving. And we want them to study,” — Olena Melnyk addressed the council members.

During the discussion council member Olena Kiselova noted that the issue is still only at the study stage.

She also expressed concern about the dissemination in the public space of information about the potential shelter site. According to the council member, certain activists published photos and videos that can be used to identify the building’s location. In a martial law situation, this can create additional security risks.

Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych emphasized that the issue is exclusively at the review stage, and decisions will be made openly after examining all circumstances.

“Our main task is to find a solution that will provide children with safe conditions for learning. No decisions regarding the purchase of the premises have been made yet. After specialists complete their work and all conclusions are received, the issue will be submitted for consideration by the council,” — the mayor said.

The council has not yet made a final decision regarding the possibility of arranging a shelter for the lyceum.
