Fewer leaks and outages: a new water main is being installed in Korabelnyi
Denmark is financing a large-scale renewal of water networks in Mykolaiv
Work is underway in the Korabelnyi district of Mykolaiv as part of the project “Non-revenue water in a selected district of the city of Mykolaiv”. It involves laying 23 kilometers of new water mains, which should reduce water losses on the way to consumers. This was reported on 9 July 2026 by the Municipal Enterprise “Mykolaivvodokanal”.
The project is funded by Denmark through the country’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and its implementation is managed by the Nordic Environmental Finance Corporation NEFCO.
The water utility explained that “non-revenue” refers to water that has already been supplied to the network but did not reach consumers and was not paid for. The main cause of such losses is worn and damaged pipes. Because of leaks the company loses income, the city spends additional resources producing water, and residents may face interruptions and deterioration in service quality.
For Mykolaiv this problem is especially acute due to infrastructure damage caused by the war and the loss of stable sources of quality water. Therefore replacing the networks should not only reduce losses but also increase the stability of water supply, service quality and the resilience of the city’s infrastructure.
At “Mykolaivvodokanal” they noted that similar projects around the world involve not only replacing pipes but also implementing leak detection systems, network zoning and digital water metering.
