August 24, 2026 Ukraine marks 35 years since the proclamation of independence. For Mykolaiv this date also left a noticeable mark: ship launches from old admiralty yards, the return of the cargo fleet to the Southern Bug, celebrations in the Korablevnyi District, a fire in the Balabanivskyi forest and a Russian strike on port infrastructure.
August 24, 1830 and 1839: warships were launched in Mykolaiv
Mykolaiv historical chronicles recorded that on August 24, 1830 at the Spassky Admiralty of Mykolaiv the 84-gun ship “Pamyat Evstafiya” was launched, and on August 24, 1839 at the Mykolaiv Admiralty the 16-gun sailing schooner “Zabiyaka” was launched. An important calendar note: these dates are given according to the then Julian calendar, so by the modern Gregorian calendar both events fall on September 5 of the respective year.
August 24, 2014: a downpour didn’t spoil the celebration in Bohoyavlensky Park
In Bohoyavlensky Park in the Korablevnyi District they celebrated the 23rd anniversary of Ukraine’s Independence. Before the ceremonies began the district was hit by a heavy downpour, but the celebration under the slogan of unity under the Ukrainian flag still took place.
August 24, 2016: the cargo fleet returned to the Southern Bug after a quarter century
After dredging of the Voznesensk – Mykolaiv section about 134 km of the Southern Bug became navigable, and on August 24, 2016 the cargo fleet arrived in Voznesensk for the first time in roughly 25 years. The company “NIBULON” reported the resumption of transport after completing the first stage of dredging, which provided a depth of about 2 m.
August 24, 2020: firefighters extinguished a fire in the Balabanivskyi forest
On Independence Day rescuers from the Korablevnyi District had to extinguish the conifer needle layer in the Balabanivskyi forest tract. The report of a fire came in at 14:45, and by 16:45 the fire was put out; according to rescuers, the cause of the ignition was arson.
August 24, 2022: Russians struck Mykolaiv’s port infrastructure with “Smerch” rockets
On the evening of Independence Day Russian forces shelled Mykolaiv with rockets from the “Smerch” system. The strike was aimed at the city’s port infrastructure; there were no human casualties.
August 24, 2023: servicemen in Mykolaiv received housing certificates
In Mykolaiv four servicemen were presented with certificates for the purchase of housing. Mass official celebrations were not held in the city that year due to war risks and the threat of Russian attacks.

August 24, 1991 the Verkhovna Rada of the Ukrainian SSR adopted the Act proclaiming Ukraine’s independence, declaring it an independent democratic state. And on August 24, 1949 the North Atlantic Treaty came into force, which became the legal basis of NATO.
Such is the history of August 24 for Mykolaiv and the Korablevnyi District: from ships of old shipyards and the revival of navigation to celebrations under Ukrainian flags and a war in which the port city continues to fight for the independence proclaimed 35 years ago.
