In Mykolaiv, the police have stepped up evening patrols. Law enforcement officers are checking places where many people gather, monitoring public order, paying attention to minors who are out late without adults, and also to cases of alcohol consumption in prohibited places. The Main Directorate of the National Police in Mykolaiv Oblast reported the preventive operation on 22 August 2026.

Evening patrols involved staff from the Department of Preventive Activities of the regional police, juvenile prevention inspectors of the Mykolaiv District Department, patrol officers, special-unit officers and representatives of other police services.

Law enforcement pays special attention to places of mass gatherings. Police talk with residents, remind them of rules of conduct in public places and the ban on consuming alcohol there.

Juvenile police officers separately approach minors they meet on the streets late in the evening without adult supervision. Preventive conversations are held with the teenagers. At the same time, the police statement does not say that a minor’s mere presence on the street in the evening is automatically an offense.

During one of these operations, law enforcement officers have already drawn up administrative materials against citizens for drinking alcohol in public places or appearing there while intoxicated. This refers to parts 1 and 2 of Article 178 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses (KUpAP).

Police also recorded an offense under part 4 of Article 126 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses (KUpAP), related to driving a vehicle without the appropriate right to do so.

After midnight – curfew in effect

The police reminded that in Mykolaiv the curfew is currently in effect from 00:00 to 05:00. During this period, being on streets and other public places without grounds provided by law is prohibited. Checks on compliance with these restrictions will continue.

Law enforcement urged residents to observe public order and specifically reminded adults of the need to take care of children’s safety.

Increased patrols amid the high-profile death of a 18-year-old boy

The issue of safety in evening and nighttime Mykolaiv has been especially actively discussed after the tragedy that occurred on the night of 17 August 2026 near a supermarket on Kosmonavtiv Street.

At around 00:35, already during the curfew, a conflict arose between the 18-year-old boy and two young men. According to the police, one of the men struck the youth in the face. The victim fell and lost consciousness, and medics were unable to save him. A 23-year-old man was notified of suspicion under part 2 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

After this tragedy, discussion in the city intensified about how safe places where young people gather in the evening and at night are and whether there is sufficient police presence there. At the same time, in its 22 August, 2026 statement the police do not directly state that the current increase in patrols was introduced specifically because of this incident.
