"I heard a hum, and then a loud explosion": Mykolaiv residents recounted the nighttime attack by "Shaheds"
Windows were blown out of houses, doors were ripped off, and debris tore through furniture and walls
On the night of 13 June 2026, Russian forces attacked Mykolaiv with strike drones of the “Shahed” type. As a result of falling debris, residential buildings were damaged, two people were wounded, and a child was recorded as having an acute stress reaction.
Eyewitnesses told reporters from Suspilne about the aftermath of the attack they experienced.
Local resident Yevhenia woke up to the air raid alarm. The explosion followed shortly afterwards. According to her, at first she did not realize the scale of the destruction and thought a window had simply shattered.
Yevhenia described how the blast damaged her room, where the bed stood right next to the window.
“At first I didn’t understand anything, the scale of the whole problem, I thought the glass had shattered. And the curtain caught all the shards that were falling, because my bed is immediately next to the window. Then my father ran into the room and asked, “Is everyone alive?” I said, “Everything’s fine.””
Yevhenia’s father was also injured — his shoulder was cut by glass. Medics provided assistance to the man on the spot. According to the woman, a neighbor was also wounded.
Yevhenia said that the neighbor looked out the window after the alarm and sustained a shrapnel wound.
“The neighbor in this building was also looking out the window after the alarm, checking what was going on. She has a shrapnel wound; they cut and stitched her up.”
In Yevhenia’s apartment three windows were shattered by the blast wave and debris, and appliances and furniture were damaged. According to her, a metal fragment flew past her father’s head.
The resident showed the aftermath of the explosion in the apartment and said that debris damaged a monitor, a wardrobe and the walls.
“A laptop monitor was smashed, there’s a hole in the wardrobe. My father was sitting at the computer, a metal object flew past his head, pierced the wardrobe wall and flew into the wall. There are also holes in the wall from metal objects. The curtain is shredded from the glass.”
Another local resident, Olga, says she heard the drone’s hum before the explosion. According to her, after the strike a window was shattered in the building and the entrance door was torn off.
Olga recalls waking up to the sound of a “Shahed”, followed by a powerful explosion.
“I woke up to the sound of the “Shahed” flying, it was so loud and strong. Then when it was shot down — there was such a roar, like the “Shahed” was coming in to land, and then a strong explosion. The window was smashed and our front door was torn off.”
Local resident Volodymyr said that his house, garage and yard were damaged as a result of the attack. The man says he still hasn’t recovered from the shock.
Volodymyr described the destruction after the explosion and noted that he cannot immediately assess the full extent of the damage.
“There was a strong explosion, and everything in my yard collapsed. The roofing on the garage fell in, and on the house as well; the windows flew out in all the rooms. They caused a lot of damage. I can’t even describe the full extent right away, because I haven’t recovered from the shock yet.”
According to the head of the sanitary inspection department of the Zavodske District administration, Andriy Veremeychuk, a total of seven buildings in the city were damaged as a result of the nighttime attack.
He also reported that three people were injured and the building of a music school sustained damage.
Andriy Veremeychuk said that municipal services are working to eliminate the consequences of the hostile attack.
“Three people were injured. The music school building also suffered damage. Municipal services are currently taking measures to eliminate the consequences of the hostile attack.”
The Russian attack again struck civilian infrastructure and the residential sector of Mykolaiv. The city’s municipal services continue to help residents with the immediate boarding up of damaged windows and the elimination of the consequences of the shelling.
