In Mykolaiv, an electric scooter driver was sent to prison for the fatal collision with a woman at a crosswalk

The Central District Court of Mykolaiv found the rider of an electric scooter Maxxter Lumina Blue 1500W guilty, who in September 2025 at a signal-controlled pedestrian crossing struck a woman who was crossing the road on a green traffic light. The court imposed a sentence of restriction of liberty on the man.

The tragic accident occurred on 26 September 2025 at about 19:08 at the intersection of Central Avenue and Sadova Street. As established by the court, the rider was traveling toward Inzhenera Street, ignored the red traffic light, did not stop before the stop line and continued through the intersection, where he struck a 43-year-old pedestrian who was lawfully crossing the road on a green light.

As a result of the collision the woman suffered serious bodily injuries. She was hospitalized, but on 28 September 2025 she died in hospital. Forensic medical examination determined that death resulted from severe combined body and head trauma sustained in the accident.

During the court hearing the accused fully admitted his guilt and stated that after the accident he tried to help the victim and repeatedly apologized to her family. At the same time, the deceased’s husband stated that he considers only the isolation of the perpetrator from society to be a just punishment.

The verdict states that the expert examination confirmed: the rider had the technical ability to avoid the collision if he had complied with the requirements of the Traffic Rules and stopped at the red traffic light. The violation of the rules was directly causally linked to the woman’s death.

Taking into account that the accused had no previous convictions, is positively characterized and sincerely repented, the court found him guilty under Article 291 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine and sentenced him to three years of restriction of liberty. In addition, he was ordered to pay 12,479.60 hryvnias in procedural costs for conducting expert examinations. The electric scooter is to be returned to the owner after the seizure is lifted.
