A ship carrying stolen Ukrainian grain entered Israel: Kyiv prepares sanctions against carriers and buyers
The decision will be coordinated with the EU to add the companies involved to its lists; the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will inform partners about the situation
Ukraine is preparing a new sanctions package against carriers and buyers of stolen Ukrainian grain, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said, and the planned restrictions are to be coordinated with European partners for maximum effectiveness.
The head of state clarified that not only logistical links but also those who profit from trading stolen grain will fall under the sanctions, and Kyiv seeks for the involved companies to be added to the European Union’s sanctions lists, coordinating these steps with EU partners.
“Purchasing stolen goods in any normal country is an act that entails legal responsibility. This concerns, in particular, grain stolen by Russia. Another ship with such grain has arrived at a port in Israel and is preparing to unload. This is not and cannot be merely business. The Israeli authorities cannot be unaware of which ships and with what cargo arrive at the country’s ports,” said Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
He also said he instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to inform international partners about the documented delivery and to take the necessary diplomatic steps to respond to the situation.
The president spoke about the preparation of the new package of restrictions in his address, the details of which were published on his Telegram channel, where it was stressed that inevitable accountability is needed for all links in the scheme, including maritime carriers and end buyers in third countries, as well as synchronizing Ukrainian actions with partners in Europe.
