Vascular surgeons at Kherson Regional Hospital saved the leg of a 65-year-old man with gangrene. They performed an endovascular recanalization—the first operation of its kind in Kherson.

The patient was admitted to the vascular surgery department with gangrene of a lower limb. During the examination, doctors found that his popliteal artery was completely blocked.

“Using special equipment, the doctors restored blood flow in the affected artery through a small incision in the thigh,” said Oleksandr Prokudin, head of the Kherson Regional Military Administration.

The operation was performed by:

  • Ihor Bolianovskyi — vascular surgeon;
  • Ruslan Ivashko — vascular surgeon.

The patient was discharged home the following day after the procedure.

The workload at another medical facility in the city, Kherson City Clinical Hospital, is 200–300% of normal. This is due to ongoing Russian shelling of the city and the large number of casualties.
