The State Archives of Mykolaiv Region lists October 9, 1897, as the date of the ceremonial opening of the Naval Shipyard, the future Black Sea Shipyard. However, there is an important calendar nuance: the Julian calendar was in use in the Russian Empire at the time, so October 9 Old Style corresponds to October 21, 1897, in the modern calendar. Korabelov.info previously covered the beginning of Naval’s history in an article about the founding of the company that built the enterprise.

As Russian aircraft attempted to strike, Ukrainian air defenses shot down an enemy attack aircraft in the skies over Mykolaiv Region. This day in Ukraine and around the world

On October 9, 1621, the Treaty of Khotyn between the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Ottoman Empire was finalized near Khotyn, bringing the Khotyn War to an end. The Zaporizhian Cossacks played an important role in the battles. And on October 9, 1940, John Lennon, future founder and member of The Beatles, was born in Liverpool, England.

That was October 9 for Mykolaiv: from shipbuilding history and trams in an occupied city to political upheaval and war. The story of Naval is another reminder of how important it is to account for the Old and New Styles when dealing with 19th-century dates.
