October 7 left a noticeable mark in the history of the Korablev District and Mykolaiv. In documents from the Holodomor era this day mentions Shyroka Balka, new sea gates of the city were opened near the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant, the Chornomorsky Shipbuilding Plant was transferred to private ownership, and during the recent war the district bid farewell to a fallen defender. A year later Mykolaiv received another long-awaited event — the centralized supply of fresh water.

October 7, 1932: repressive grain procurements also affected Shyroka Balka

At a joint meeting of the Mykolaiv City Committee of the CP(b)U and the city council, the authorities declared the state of autumn sowing unsatisfactory and demanded increased pressure on farms that failed to meet grain procurement plans. Among the village councils for which fines against individual farmers were to be applied was Shyrokobalkivska. Korabelov.info earlier published these archival testimonies, and research by the Institute of History of Ukraine also confirms the decision of October 7, 1932. This is one of the documentary traces of the intensification of forced grain procurements on the eve of the deadliest months of the Holodomor.

October 7, 1978: the Dnipro-Buh sea port opened on the territory of the Alumina Plant

On this day the Dnipro-Buh Sea Port, built on the territory of the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant, was ceremonially opened. By that time 4 berths had been completed, of which 2 were deep-water. The motor ship “Zakarpattia” was the first to moor at the new port, delivering 22,400 tons of bauxites to the plant. Thus, new powerful sea gates appeared in the southern part of Mykolaiv, whose history is directly linked to the industrial development of today’s Korablev District.

October 7, 2003: the controlling stake of the Chornomorsky Shipbuilding Plant was sold

Under the agreement of October 7, 2003, OJSC “Mykolaiv Small-tonnage Shipyard” acquired 90.25% of the shares of the Chornomorsky Shipbuilding Plant for UAH 119.305 million. These data are recorded in the court case materials. Later the State Property Fund attempted through the courts to terminate the agreement and return the stake to the state. For one of Mykolaiv’s main shipbuilding enterprises this privatization became an important milestone in its post-Soviet history.

October 7, 2020: Mykolaiv region mourned the fallen cadets

On October 7, 2020 a day of mourning was declared in the Mykolaiv region for those killed in the military An-26 crash near Chuhuiv. In Mykolaiv, at the memorial complex to the paratroopers from Olshanka, residents bid farewell to their fellow countrymen — cadets of the Kharkiv National Air Force University and Volodymyr Olabin, who died in the air crash.

October 7, 2024: Korablev District laid warrior “Kasper” to rest

At the Church of the Holy Apostles Peter and Paul in Balabanivka, residents of the Korablev District said goodbye to Ukrainian defender Yevhen Tolstykh, call sign “Kasper”. He was killed near the village of Verbove on September 19, 2023, was considered missing for a long time, and approximately a year later his identity was established by DNA. The hero was buried in the Alley of Glory at Balabanivka Cemetery.

October 7, 2025: centralized supply of fresh water returned to Mykolaiv

For the first time since the old water main was destroyed in 2022, Mykolaiv received a centralized supply of fresh water: as of October 7, 2025 the new water main was already supplying it uninterruptedly to the city system. Korabelov.info reported that the system’s capacity was up to 120,000 cubic meters per day for the population and another 50,000 cubic meters for irrigation. At the same time, at that moment the water could not yet be considered potable — the city was using the old treatment facilities.

And on October 7, 2001 the United States and its allies launched a military operation in Afghanistan against Al-Qaeda and the Taliban regime, which became the beginning of the longest war in US history.

That was October 7 for Mykolaiv and the Korablev District: from tragic Holodomor documents and the appearance of the Dnipro-Buh port to the decline of a major shipbuilding enterprise, remembrance of fallen defenders, and the long-awaited return of fresh water.
