October 4 left very different traces in the history of Mykolaiv: on that day one of the most famous ships built by Mykolaiv shipbuilders received a new name, workers at the “Okean” shipyard were waiting for earned wages after a strike, the city was losing its defenders, and the Korabelnyi district finally got a trolleybus.
October 4, 1990: the Mykolaiv aircraft-carrying cruiser was given the name “Admiral Kuznetsov”
The heavy aircraft-carrying cruiser, built at the Black Sea Shipyard in Mykolaiv and known at that time as “Tbilisi”, was renamed to “Admiral of the Fleet of the Soviet Union Kuznetsov”. The ship was laid down in 1982, and by the time of the renaming it was already undergoing flight-design and state trials.
October 4, 2012: at “Okean” they still hadn’t received new payments
At the “Okean” shipbuilding plant in the Korabelnyi district, after the September strike and the shift of part of the enterprise to a three-day workweek, the situation remained tense. Korabelov.info wrote that as of October 4, 2012 employees had not received new payments, and the promised collective appeal to the head of the regional state administration had not been officially registered.
October 4, 2014: Mykolaiv 79th Brigade officer Yevhen Piven was killed
During the defense of Donetsk Airport died Yevhen Oleksiyovych Piven — an officer of the 79th Separate Airmobile Brigade, who had served in the Mykolaiv unit since 1994. On the night of October 4, 2014 he stayed to cover the withdrawal of his comrades and was fatally wounded by a grenade explosion. The defender was buried in Mykolaiv, in Velyka Korenytsia.
October 4, 2023: a serviceman wounded during the strike on the Kulbakine airfield died
In a hospital in Kyiv died 27-year-old Serhii Mykolayovych Filonenko, a serviceman of the 15th Transport Aviation Brigade. He suffered severe burns and shrapnel wounds on September 29, 2023 during a Russian missile strike while performing a combat mission at the Kulbakine airfield in Mykolaiv.
October 4, 2024: after more than 30 years of waiting, Korabelnyi finally received a trolleybus
In Mykolaiv they launched trolleybus route No. 10 to the Korabelnyi district. It connected the “Mykolaiv-Pasazhyrskyi” railway station via Prospekt Myru, Kosmonavtiv Street and Bohoyavlenskyi Avenue with the terminus on Aivazovskogo Street. For the district this was truly a historic event: talks about trolleybus service there had gone on for more than 30 years, but it was possible to implement it only thanks to vehicles with autonomous operation.

October 4, 1957 the “Sputnik-1” — the first artificial satellite of the Earth — was launched into space. This event is considered the beginning of the space age. That is why the UN observes World Space Week from October 4 to 10.
That was October 4 for Mykolaiv and the Korabelnyi district: Mykolaiv shipbuilders built unique ships, “Okean” went through hard times, the city lost soldiers, and decades later one of the long-standing transport promises for Korabelnyi finally became reality.
