Leila, the daughter of Mykolaiv camel Zaurbek, has settled at the Mykolaiv Zoo —
Born on June 1, 2025, in Odesa as part of a breeding program, Leila arrived in Mykolaiv on the eve of the zoo's 125th anniversary
In Mykolaiv the collection of the Mykolaiv Zoo was joined by a young female camel, Leyla, her arrival was announced by the facility director Volodymyr Topchiy.
According to the management, the new female is the daughter of the camel Zaurbek, who was born in the Mykolaiv Zoo and was later transferred to the Odesa BIO-Park as part of an animal breeding program.
“23 June 2020 a small male camel was born into the family of Mykolaiv’s two-humped camels. They named him Zaurbek. He spent three years growing up in the Mykolaiv Zoo and, at the special request of the Odesa BIO-Park, under a breeding agreement, on 10 October 2023 he went to Odesa. He successfully fulfilled the task that was set for him, and from an Odesa female a daughter was born on 1 June 2025. Today she arrived at the Mykolaiv Zoo and we named her Leyla here,” — said Volodymyr Topchiy.
Leyla’s arrival was the result of an inter-zoo exchange under a breeding agreement: her father Zaurbek grew up in Mykolaiv, sired offspring in Odesa, after which the young was transferred to the zoo where the sire had originally been born.
