A drunk resident of Mykolaiv threatened to blow up an apartment building by turning on the gas in the kitchen
The man faces up to ten years' imprisonment for what he did
A man informed the operators of the emergency hotline 112 that he intended to carry out an explosion of a multi-storey building on one of the city’s streets. The phone call from the caller came on the evening of May 4, 2026. Patrol officers and investigators of the Mykolaiv District Department’s investigative-operational group arrived at the address provided by the caller.
In the entrance hall, law enforcement officers smelled the odor of household gas, which local residents also complained about. Having determined from which apartment the gas was coming, the police demanded that the apartment owner open the door, which he refused. Therefore, the officers, in order to carry out an urgent search, had to enter the apartment through a window.
Gas distribution workers shut off the supply of household gas that the man had opened on the kitchen stove, and the police detained the 52-year-old offender under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. According to the results of a medical examination for intoxication, he had 2.20 ‰ of alcohol.
Investigators, under the procedural guidance of the Mykolaiv District Prosecutor’s Office, have now informed the detainee of suspicion of committing a criminal offense provided for by part 2 of Art. 15 and part 2 of Art. 194 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine – attempted intentional destruction or damage of property.
For the committed act the Mykolaiv resident faces up to ten years of imprisonment.
Soon the court will decide on a preventive measure for the suspect, who had previously come to the attention of law enforcement. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
