A woman was injured while protecting her dog from a terrier in Odesa
The animal’s owner faces a fine and confiscation of the dog
An American Staffordshire Terrier’s attack on a mixed-breed dog in Odesa’s Kyivskyi District left the dog’s 29-year-old owner injured. The woman hurt her arm and knee while trying to protect her pet. The incident took place last week on Nebesnoi Sotni Avenue.
The circumstances were reported by the Odesa District Police Department No. 1. The Odesa resident was walking her dog when she encountered a 39-year-old man with an American Staffordshire Terrier, a breed on the list of dangerous dogs.
According to the woman, the man began complaining that she was in that area. A verbal argument broke out between the pet owners. During the altercation, the terrier, which was not wearing a muzzle, broke free of its leash and attacked her dog.
The woman tried to protect her pet and was injured. Her dog needed medical attention: it had multiple bite wounds on various parts of its body.
The following day, the woman filed a police report requesting that the dog’s owner be held accountable. Community police officers from the Police Department No. 4 of the Odesa District Police Department No. 1 identified the man and drew up an administrative offense report against him.
His actions were classified under Part 3 of Article 154 of the Code of Ukraine on Administrative Offenses. The charge concerns violating dog-keeping regulations in a way that causes harm to a person’s health or property. The penalty is a fine of up to 3,400 hryvnias and confiscation of the animal. The police will submit the collected materials to the court, which will make the final decision.
Following the attack, police reminded owners of the rules for keeping and walking animals:
- Choose designated areas for walks.
- Use leashes and muzzles, especially for dogs of dangerous breeds.
- Do not leave animals unattended.
- Owners of private homes should ensure their property is securely fenced so that dogs cannot run out onto the street on their own.
The dog’s owner is responsible for the consequences of an attack.
