Mykolaiv Trolleybuses Turn 59! The Fleet Has Been Completely Renewed
There are 13 routes operating in the city, with some trolleybuses running without overhead wires
October 29, 2026 marked the 59th anniversary of trolleybus service in Mykolaiv. In recent years, Mykolaiv Elektrotrans Municipal Enterprise has completely replaced its fleet, and some of its current vehicles can travel sections of their routes without connecting to the overhead wires.
The story began on October 29, 1967, when trolleybuses of the Kyiv-4 model took to the city streets for the first time.
The network has changed since then. Its current scale and upgrades are reflected in the following figures:
- Seven new trolleybus routes have opened in recent years, bringing the total number in operation to 13.
- The overhead wire network stretches for 61 kilometers.
- The longest route opened on October 4, 2024. It connected Aivazovskyi Street with Kurortna Street and was 56.1 kilometers long.
- 8 of the 13 trolleybuses are equipped with autonomous running systems, which allow them to travel certain sections without overhead wires.
- The city’s electric transit system is operated by 156 drivers and other employees of the enterprise.
Another area of change is the modernization of older vehicles. Staff at Mykolaiv Elektrotrans upgraded a Dnipro trolleybus themselves, increasing its autonomous range from 1 to 20 kilometers.
The decision to carry out this upgrade came after new trolleybuses with extended autonomous range entered service. These vehicles can serve outlying neighborhoods and operate during power outages.
“We thank every employee of the enterprise for your daily work, for the strength and time you devote to what you do, and for continuing your work even in difficult times. After all, the history of Mykolaiv’s trolleybuses is first and foremost the story of its people,” reads the anniversary message to the enterprise’s employees.
