The driver who fled the hospital after the fatal crash in Mykolaiv was found the next day

In the evening on 23 September, at approximately 21:25, on Troitska Street in Mykolaiv a fatal road traffic accident occurred. The 39-year-old driver of the Toyota RAV 4 drove off the carriageway, after which the crossover collided with a house fence.

The driver and two of his passengers — a 28-year-old woman and a 46-year-old man — were taken to a medical facility with injuries of varying severity. The man later died in hospital.

According to preliminary police data, the driver was intoxicated. He later disappeared from the hospital in an unknown direction. The next day, 24 September, police established his whereabouts, and investigators detained the man under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine.

Investigators of the transport crimes investigation department of the investigative directorate qualified the incident under Part 2 of Article 286 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — violation of traffic safety rules or the operation of transport by persons driving vehicles, which caused the death of the victim. The article’s sanction provides for up to eight years of imprisonment with disqualification from the right to drive vehicles for a period of up to three years or without such disqualification.

Appointed expert examinations are to establish whether the detainee was under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or other intoxicants at the time of the offense. Authorities are currently deciding whether to formally notify the suspect of suspicion and on the choice of a preventive measure. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
