A new mural dedicated to freedom and memory has appeared in Mykolaiv. It was created in honor of Ukrainians who are awaited at home today — servicemen and civilians held in Russian captivity, as well as those missing without a trace.

At the center of the composition is the young Taras Shevchenko with a paintbrush in his hands. In the background is the Aral Sea, which the poet saw and depicted almost two centuries ago. His works today help preserve the memory of a sea largely destroyed as a result of Soviet policy.

An important symbol of the mural is broken shackles, through which grass and flowers grow as an image of liberation, restoration, and life that triumphs over bondage.

The project was initiated by the city’s chief architect Yevhen Polyakov and Mykolaiv artist Valeria Kucher. It was made possible thanks to the support of the Mykolaiv Development Agency, private patrons, and the work of artists Dmytro Voloshyn and Valeria Kucher.
