Reconstruction of the city’s oldest school: restoration of the Arkas Gymnasium is underway in Mykolaiv The restoration of the First Ukrainian Gymnasium named after Mykola Arkas is underway in Mykolaiv; the building was heavily damaged by Russian shelling in 2022.
The building is the city’s oldest school and an architectural monument, so the restoration work is being carried out in compliance with all requirements for preserving the historical heritage.
The client is the Capital Construction Department of the Mykolaiv City Council. The project is being implemented by the United Nations Office for Project Services (UNOPS) with financial support from the Government of Denmark as part of the “Housing and Social Infrastructure Recovery” initiative.
Repairs began in January. So far, specialists have carried out stabilization work, reinforced the foundation, repaired the roof, installed shelters on the basement level, and restored the façade section. With the onset of cold weather, contractors will move on to interior finishing.
The progress of the reconstruction was reviewed by Mykolaiv City Mayor Oleksandr Sienkevych, his deputy Serhiy Korenev, representatives of the UNOPS office in Ukraine Massimo Diani and Teresa Molero Rodriguez, as well as delegates from the Office of the Embassy of Denmark in Mykolaiv and the contracting organization.
“We already inspected this site at the beginning of the summer. Now, at the end of the season, we are checking the pace and quality of the work. There are enough specialists working on the site; the process is going according to schedule. I thank the team and the Government of Denmark for supporting the restoration of this city’s oldest school. We look forward to the completion of the work and the return of children to the classrooms”, – said Oleksandr Sienkevych.
