Almost 6,000 fewer in a year: how many children will be studying in the Mykolaiv region
5,782 children will start first grade: many of them are internally displaced
In the 2026/2027 school year, about 88,500 students will study in schools of the Mykolaiv region. Over the year their number decreased by 5,800. This was reported by the director of the Department of Education and Science of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration, Alla Velikhovska, during a meeting of the profile commission of the Mykolaiv Regional Council, which took place August 18, 2026.
Last school year the region counted 94,300 students. Thus, the number of pupils fell by almost six thousand.
“We have 88,500 students. Last year there were 94,300,” said Alla Velikhovska.
About 76,240 children are planned to be taught in in-person and blended formats. That is about 86% of the total number of students in the region.
As of August 5, parents submitted 5,782 applications for enrolling children in first grade. These data have already been entered into the automated information complex for educational management AIKOM. Alla Velikhovska emphasized that the figure remains preliminary and may change before the start of the school year. According to her, among future first-graders there are many displaced children, mainly from Kherson Oblast. Families move to the Mykolaiv region and enroll children in local schools because here there is an opportunity to study in-person.
According to preliminary plans, in the new school year:
- 244 schools will operate in-person;
- 107 institutions will organize blended learning;
- 41 schools will remain in a distance learning format.
Distance learning will be used mainly by children from educational institutions located near areas of active hostilities.
Parents of first-graders can also apply for the state aid “Schoolchild’s Package”. Its amount is 5,000 hryvnias per child enrolled in first grade in Ukraine. The application can be submitted through the “Diia” app, and the funds can be spent on books, stationery, school supplies, clothing and shoes. The government says the aid is provided regardless of family income.
