800 students are waiting to return: the damaged lyceum in the Korabelnyi district may not open by September 1
The shelter has remained intact and requires minor repairs
The mayor, Oleksandr Senkevych, on the air of the TV channel «MART» spoke about the situation at the lyceum in the Korabelnyi district, which suffered significant damage as a result of the Russian attack on 2 August.
According to the mayor, cleanup and recovery work began on site immediately after the shelling. He praised the school’s staff, who from the first days joined the cleanup and preparation of the school for restoration.
The primary task today is to install new windows, since one side of the building was left without them, and other buildings also sustained damage. For this, the city is negotiating with partners from Denmark and Norway, who may help fund the restoration work.
At the same time, the shelter, previously arranged with the support of international partners, withstood the strike. Despite the explosion occurring near its location, the structure remained intact and requires only minor repairs.
The renovated dining facility also suffered damage during reconstruction, and a school bus purchased with co-financing from a state subsidy and the city budget was destroyed by fire.
“We will do everything as quickly as possible. As soon as the school is safe for children, we will immediately resume in-person classes. We would like to make it by 1 September, but everything depends on how quickly it will be possible to manufacture and install new windows,” — Oleksandr Senkevych noted.
About 800 students attended the lyceum before the damage. City authorities are working to return the institution to full operation as soon as possible.
