17 dead and 44 injured: Russia launched 24 ballistic missiles at Kyiv and the region

On the night of 5 August 2026, Russian occupying forces carried out a large-scale combined attack on Kyiv and the Kyiv region. According to the latest data, 17 people were killed and 44 people were injured. The enemy’s main targets were warehouses of civilian companies, logistics centers, railway infrastructure and other objects not related to the military.

During the strike the Russians used 28 missiles and 115 drones. The enemy launched 24 ballistic missiles “Iskander‑M”/S-400, 4 “Zircon”/“Onyx” missiles, as well as Shahed, Gerbera, Italmas type drones and drone imitators. A significant portion of the strike drones were jet-powered.

Air defence forces shot down or suppressed 98 drones, however impacts of missiles and 17 drones in 26 locations were recorded.

The first data from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine mostly concerned the consequences of the strike on the Kyiv region. At that time 14 dead and 22 wounded were reported. After clarifying information from Kyiv and the region the total number of victims rose to 17, and the injured — to 44.

The largest number of fatalities in the Kyiv region was recorded in the Brovary district — 9 people. In the Bucha district 4 civilians were killed, and in the Fastiv district — 1 person.

In the Brovary district 12 people were injured, in Bucha — 7, in Fastiv — 3.

Rescuers worked at 7 locations in 3 districts of the region. Large fires broke out in warehouse buildings in Brovary, Velyka Dymerka, Kvitneve and Peremoha.

In the Fastiv district vehicles were burning on the premises of an enterprise, and in the village of Chaiky in Bucha district — a warehouse building. The fire at the logistics company’s site in Sofiivska Borshchahivka was extinguished.

In Kyiv fires broke out in the Obolonskyi, Sviatoshynskyi, Holosiivskyi and Desnianskyi districts. After bringing the fires under control, rescuers continued dismantling and dousing the destroyed structures.

680 rescuers and 140 units of SES equipment were involved in eliminating the consequences of the large-scale attack.

The company “Nova Poshta” reported the destruction of a sorting centre. According to the company, 3 people were killed at the site and 8 were injured. The statement also mentioned the use of Russian forces of cluster munitions.

Among the damaged civilian facilities were named logistics centers of “Nova Poshta”, warehouses of “Rozetka”, “Epicenter” and “Novus”, a brewery and premises for storing construction materials. The Russian strike was once again directed against Ukrainian business and people working at civilian enterprises.

Bodies of the dead were found on a railway platform near the attacked logistics centers in the Brovary district. During the large-scale attack train movements and station operations were temporarily stopped, and staff and passengers were evacuated.

Ukrzaliznytsia reported fatalities on the railway platform near the attacked logistics facilities.

“According to operational information, there are fatalities found on the railway platform near the attacked logistics centers”.

The head of the Brovary district state administration, Vitalii Bihun, clarified that 8 people died directly at the “Kvitneve” railway station in the Brovary district. According to him, the electric train was delayed, so people were on the platform during the Russian attack.

After the strike, emergency services and repair crews worked on the railway infrastructure. Ukrzaliznytsia warned of possible changes to traffic and promised to report separately when full restoration of operations is achieved.

President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky, reporting updated data on the consequences of the Russian strike, stressed that the main targets were civilian enterprises, warehouses and logistics infrastructure.

“As of now, 44 people injured from the large-scale Russian strike on Kyiv and Kyiv region are known. Unfortunately, 17 people have been killed. My condolences to the families and loved ones. It was a heavy strike: 24 ballistic missiles, 4 ‘Zircon/Onyx’ and another 115 drones, a large part of them jet-powered. The main target of the attack was warehouse premises of civilian enterprises, there were also strikes on infrastructure, a railway station. Objects unrelated to the war: a brewery, building materials warehouses, civilian logistics”.

Commenting on the heavy human losses, President Volodymyr Zelensky called on partners to accelerate deliveries to Ukraine of means to intercept ballistic missiles, and also to strengthen sanctions against Russian enterprises that manufacture such weapons.

“Ballistic interceptors are what could have preserved the lives lost today. It is very important that partners understand that delays in their delivery or unwillingness to transfer anti‑ballistic systems leads precisely to such terrible victims and destruction. Partners who are not ready to help more actively with interceptor deliveries right now can help with new sanctions steps. A significant portion of Russian ballistic production is not under sanctions. Yet. New steps are needed from the G7 and the EU, from everyone who supports the protection of life. Thanks to those who are ready to help in this way”.
