During the occupation, Mykolaiv was part of the Romanian-German administrative zone. The city’s liberation took place in March 1944 during the advance of Soviet troops as part of the Dnieper–Carpathian operation. After liberation, Mykolaiv was heavily damaged and required extensive reconstruction.
