In Mykolaiv, a man struck an artillery shell casing with a hammer: one killed, two injured
Two more injured people remain under doctors' supervision
On the day of August 6 an explosion occurred at a scrap metal collection point in the Velyka Korenykha neighborhood in Mykolaiv. A 36-year-old local resident brought there casings from artillery shells and struck one of them with a hammer. A detonation followed, as a result of which the man received fatal injuries.
Two other people who were nearby were also injured. Medics reported the injured to operators of the emergency line 102.
During initial investigative and operational-search activities, officers of the Mykolaiv District Police Department and operatives of the criminal investigation department of the regional headquarters determined that the man had brought a total of five artillery shell casings to the collection point. He struck one of them with a hammer, after which the explosion occurred.
As a result of the detonation, three people aged 26, 36 and 51 sustained injuries of varying severity. The 36-year-old victim later died in a medical facility from his injuries. Doctors assess the condition of the two other injured people as moderate; they are under medical supervision.
At the scene, specialists from the explosive ordnance disposal service of the regional headquarters of the Police of Mykolaiv Oblast recovered fragments of the explosive object. The specialists inspected the other four casings and determined that they do not pose a danger. The recovered casings were sent for appropriate examinations.
Investigators of the Mykolaiv District Police Department have opened a pre-trial investigation and are establishing the origin of the explosive items.
Law enforcement officers urge citizens to be extremely careful if they find unknown objects. Do not approach, move, transport, disassemble, or attempt to neutralize such objects yourself. Explosive items should only be handled by specially trained professionals.
