A repeat offender stole a brushcutter at a gas station in Mykolaiv — the court sentenced the criminal to more than seven years in prison
Mowed himself a sentence: a man sold a stolen brushcutter and got a jail term
On May 4, 2026 the press service of the Central District Court of the city of Mykolaiv reported a sentence for a 33-year-old previously convicted man who was accused of stealing a brushcutter from the territory of a gas station. The verdict in the case was handed down by judge of the Central District Court of Mykolaiv Ivan Dirko.
The court found that the man was near one of the gas stations on Heroes of Ukraine Avenue in Mykolaiv. There he noticed a brushcutter lying on the ground next to the filling station. After making sure that no one was watching him, the man took the tool and left the gas station premises. During the court hearing the defendant admitted his guilt. He said that the station employees were nearby, that he took the brushcutter, walked to the stop, got on a trolleybus and left. Later he sold the tool to an unknown person for one thousand hryvnias.
When determining the punishment the court took into account information about the defendant. In particular, it noted that the man had been convicted multiple times, is not officially employed and has no children to support.
The court found the man guilty and sentenced him to five years of imprisonment.
At the same time, taking into account Part 4 of Article 70 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine, the final term of the sentence amounted to seven years and three months of imprisonment.
This case became another example of how a seemingly minor theft can result, for a person with a criminal past, in an actual long prison term.
