In Kyiv, 13-year-old Ivan posthumously saved four lives through donation
At Okhmatdyt, a teenager’s organs were transplanted into four patients, giving them a chance to recover
At the children’s hospital «Okhmatdyt» in Kyiv 13-year-old Ivan, after brain death was declared, became a donor, giving a chance to live to four patients who had been waiting for transplants.
The event was reported by the National Children’s Specialized Hospital «Okhmatdyt», noting that the teenager had been brought in with a severe traumatic brain injury. Doctors fought for him for a long time, but later confirmed brain death. After that, the parents decided to consent to posthumous organ donation.
The boy’s mother explained that the choice was emotionally difficult, but the family wanted their son to help others even after his loss.
— I have followed for many years the work of the doctor who performs transplants. When Ivan’s father and I realized that the irreparable had happened, one of the first thoughts was — donation. That at least one organ might save someone’s life. I think it was his choice… Ivan was always very kind and generous. He is a warrior of light, a warrior of goodness, — said the teenager’s mother, Oksana.
Ivan’s organs were transplanted into four people from the waiting list, for whom this became a vital opportunity to continue the fight against illness.
The hospital emphasized the importance of posthumous donation for saving patients in critical condition and added that the medical team honored Ivan with a corridor of honor. Details were published on the institution’s Facebook page.
— Posthumous donation is a difficult but extremely important decision that makes it possible to save the lives of others even at a moment of irreparable loss. Medical staff escorted Ivan through the corridor of honor with deep respect and gratitude. We express our sincere condolences to the family.
