Russia Is Increasingly Openly Rejecting Trump’s Peace Proposals — Sybiha
The minister links Moscow’s uncompromising stance to a weakening of international pressure
Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha believes that Russia is openly rejecting U.S. President Donald Trump’s peace initiatives because it does not feel sufficient international pressure. He shared his assessment of Moscow’s position on ending the war on X.
The reaction was prompted by recent remarks from Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. He ruled out a ceasefire in Ukraine on the proposed terms. Russia says it is refusing because a temporary truce would allegedly give the Ukrainian army an opportunity to regroup and receive additional weapons from its Western partners.
In addition, Lavrov repeated accusations against the Ukrainian authorities, claiming that conditions for holding presidential elections in Ukraine are allegedly unacceptable.
“Russia rejects peace. Everyone knows this. But how openly they are prepared to reject President Trump’s proposals shows just how arrogant they are,” said Ukraine’s Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha.
In the view of Ukraine’s top diplomat, the lack of a firm response from international partners allows the Kremlin to take an increasingly uncompromising position on ending the war. He emphasizes that the Russian leadership is not only rejecting a peaceful settlement but is also showing ever more openly that it is unwilling to make concessions.
“Russian killers have absolutely no respect for calls for peace. This is what happens when pressure eases: the less pressure there is, the greater their arrogance,” Sybiha stressed.
Amid discussions of diplomatic ways to end the war, the positions of Kyiv and Moscow on a cessation of hostilities remain fundamentally different.
