U.S. President Donald Trump, during a meeting in Beijing, personally asked China’s leader Xi Jinping to help bring Russian President Vladimir Putin back to negotiations on Ukraine and to assist in ending the war, reports the South China Morning Post.
According to the publication’s sources, Trump noted that dialogue between Russia and Ukraine is effectively blocked, and urged China to act as a mediator to persuade Putin to resume talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.
Such an appeal fits into Washington‘s strategy of involving Beijing in steps to end the war in Ukraine, and this direction has become one of the key elements of Trump’s foreign policy after his return to the White House in 2025.
