October 12 in the history of Korabelnyi District and Mykolaiv brought together tragic, important, and even unexpected events. Over the years, this day has seen tributes to fallen soldiers, decisions about the future of an industrial giant, disputes over street names, and a routine altercation in Shyroka Balka that ended in gunfire.
October 12, 2012: a late-night argument in Shyroka Balka ended in a shooting
Around midnight in the Shyroka Balka neighbourhood, a conflict between a taxi driver and passengers escalated into a shooting. According to a police report, the owner of a house where the taxi had stopped intervened in the argument and fired several shots from a shotgun. The driver sustained wounds to his neck, torso, and thigh. He was hospitalized, and the shooter was detained. Witnesses gave different accounts of the conflict.
October 12, 2020: a memorial plaque to Roman Klimov was unveiled in Korabelnyi
A memorial plaque to former student and defender of Ukraine Roman Robertovych Klimov was unveiled on the facade of School No. 14 in Korabelnyi District. He volunteered for the front in 2014, served in the 72nd Separate Mechanized Brigade, and was killed on February 3, 2017, near Avdiivka during a mortar attack. He was posthumously awarded the Order of Courage, 3rd Class. His family, fellow soldiers, teachers, and city representatives attended the unveiling.
October 12, 2021: Balabanivka paid tribute to a fallen marine
A memorial plaque to Serhii Serhiiovych Prostiakov, who grew up in the neighbourhood and attended the school, was unveiled at Mykolaiv Gymnasium No. 49 in Balabanivka. In 2015, he volunteered to defend Ukraine and served in the 36th Separate Marine Brigade. The marine died on August 8, 2016, aged 34, from severe injuries sustained at the front. The words “Heroes never die!” are engraved on the plaque.
October 12, 2021: a court battle over the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant and 9.2 billion hryvnias
The Mykolaiv Court of Appeal heard a high-profile case brought by the “Stop Sludge” public organization against the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant. The case concerned a claim for approximately 9.2 billion hryvnias in moral damages to be paid to the organization’s members. The plant’s representatives sought to submit new evidence concerning the procedure for appointing the first-instance judge, but the panel rejected the motion. The hearing was continued at the next session.
October 12, 2022: Zelenskyy signed a sanctions decree against Deripaska
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy signed Decree No. 694/2022, enacting the National Security and Defense Council’s decision on sanctions, including sanctions against Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, who was linked to control of the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant. As Korabelov.info reported, the restrictions provided for the blocking of assets for 10 years. The decree took effect after its publication on October 14, 2022. Subsequently, assets linked to the oligarch, including the plant, were seized for the benefit of the state under separate court rulings.
October 12, 2022: nine Shahed drones were shot down over Mykolaiv Region
In the morning, air defence forces destroyed nine Iranian Shahed-136 kamikaze drones over Mykolaiv Region. The Ukrainian Air Force Command reported the incident. That same night, Russian forces shelled the outskirts of Mykolaiv, damaging private homes. The city continued to live under the constant threat of air attacks.
October 12, 2023: new names proposed for four streets in Korabelnyi
In Mykolaiv, the toponymy commission published its first proposals for decolonizing city names. In Korabelnyi District, it proposed renaming Sorge Street to Lithuanian Street, Gagarin Street to Sudkovskyi Street, Cosmonaut Volkov Street to Admiral Bilynskyi Street, and Yesenin Street to Vysheslavskyi Street. Overall, the proposals covered 171 streets and lanes across the city. At the time, these were commission proposals, not final approved renamings.
October 12, 2024: from Korabelnyi to Namyv without leaving the trolleybus
The municipal enterprise Mykolaivelektrotrans described an unusual public transport option: passengers could travel from Korabelnyi District to Namyv without changing trolleybuses. A trolleybus on route No. 10 from Aivazovskoho Street arrived at the railway station and, after a break of approximately 7 minutes, continued on route No. 2 to Namyv. This became another benefit of the long-awaited trolleybus connection to Korabelnyi.

October 12, 2022: 143 countries supported Ukraine’s territorial integrity
The UN General Assembly adopted a resolution condemning Russia’s attempt to illegally annex Ukraine’s Donetsk, Luhansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Kherson regions. 143 countries voted in favour, 5 against, and 35 abstained.
October 12, 2025: Europe began switching to digital border controls
The gradual rollout of the Entry/Exit System (EES) began in 29 European countries. For Ukrainians travelling for short stays, it provides for the electronic recording of border crossings and the registration of biometric data instead of traditional passport stamps. The transition took place gradually.
That is how October 12 became part of the history of Korabelnyi District and Mykolaiv: remembrance of defenders within school walls, the struggle over the future of the Mykolaiv Alumina Plant, changes to city streets, and life under shelling.
