Almost two months later, a second suspect in the fatal beating of an 18-year-old resident of Mykolaiv
Both suspects were given the opportunity to be released from custody on bail
A second suspect has emerged in the case of the death of an 18-year-old boy near a supermarket on Kosmonavtiv Street in Mykolaiv. After conducting forensic medical examinations, reviewing video footage and questioning witnesses, law enforcement officials said that not only the previously detained 23-year-old man was involved in the fatal beating, but also his 29-year-old friend.
The tragedy occurred on August 17, 2026, at approximately 00:35 near a supermarket on Kosmonavtiv Street. According to investigators, a conflict broke out between the 18-year-old boy and two men.
Police now say that during the altercation, both suspects struck the victim in the head and face. After the beating, the boy fell to the ground and lost consciousness. He died at the scene from his injuries.
On the day of the tragedy, law enforcement officials detained the 23-year-old participant in the altercation under Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. With the approval of the Mykolaiv District Prosecutor’s Office, he was notified of suspicion under Part 2 of Article 121 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine — intentional grievous bodily harm resulting in the victim’s death.
Initially, the court remanded the 23-year-old suspect in custody without the possibility of bail. Korabelov.info reported this on August 19, 2026.
However, as the investigation continued, the picture of what happened changed. Law enforcement officials conducted the relevant forensic medical examinations, analyzed surveillance camera footage, and carried out other investigative and procedural actions, including with witnesses.
As a result, investigators concluded that the 29-year-old man who had been with the detained suspect that night was also involved in the beating. According to police, he also struck the 18-year-old victim in the head.
Based on the evidence gathered, the 29-year-old suspect was notified of suspicion, under the procedural guidance of the prosecutor’s office, of intentionally inflicting grievous bodily harm as part of a group, resulting in the victim’s death.
The first suspect’s preventive measure has also changed. The court replaced the 23-year-old man’s detention without bail with detention with the possibility of bail. The same preventive measure was imposed on the 29-year-old suspect. The police statement did not specify the bail amount.
Both men face up to 10 years in prison. The pre-trial investigation is ongoing.
It will be recalled that immediately after the tragedy on August 17, law enforcement officials reported that the conflict had occurred between the deceased and two young men, but only the 23-year-old man was charged at the time.
