Grabbed a knife and delivered a fatal blow: a gathering in Mykolaiv ended in murder

A gathering at a mutual acquaintance’s on the street Pivdenna in Mykolaiv ended in a deadly brawl. According to the police, a 64-year-old man stabbed his 35-year-old opponent, who then grabbed the knife and dealt the older man a fatal blow to the neck. The victim died in the ambulance.

Medics’ reports about the fight and the man’s death were received by the emergency line 102 on October 3. Responding to the call were:

• the investigative-operational team of Police Department No. 2 of the Mykolaiv District Directorate;
• officers from that department and the regional police headquarters;
• specialists from the forensic laboratory of the investigative department.

According to circumstances established by the police, both men were guests at their mutual acquaintance’s place and had been drinking alcohol. A verbal argument between them escalated into a fight. Initially the older participant inflicted a stab wound on the younger man’s neck. After that the 35-year-old man grabbed the knife and struck the 64-year-old opponent in the neck as well.

During the examination of the body, the forensic medical examiner recorded a stab wound to the neck. The younger participant in the incident was provided medical assistance at the scene. According to the police, there is no threat to his life or health.

With the help of analysts from the criminal analysis department of the regional headquarters, law enforcement identified all participants in the conflict. The deceased and the suspect are local residents. The younger man had previously come to the attention of the police.

Forensic experts seized an item of evidence. Investigators will send it for examination.

Operatives brought the 35-year-old suspect to the police station. There investigators detained him in accordance with Article 208 of the Criminal Procedure Code of Ukraine. Under the procedural supervision of the prosecutor’s office, the man was informed of suspicion of intentional homicide under part 1 of Article 115 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine.

The penalty under this article provides for up to 15 years imprisonment. The court will soon decide on the suspect’s preventive measure.
