Russians attacked train No. 122 Kyiv - Mykolaiv three times: 168 passengers were evacuated
There were no casualties
In the morning of 16 September 2026 Russian forces attacked with an attack UAV the passenger train No.122 Kyiv – Mykolaiv on the section of the route between Novyi Buh and Bashtanka. After the first strike the enemy twice attacked the same train again over the next two and a half hours. Despite the three attacks, none of the passengers or railway workers were injured.
As reported by the acting head of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration Heorhiy Reshetilov, casualties were avoided thanks to the work of the monitoring services of “Ukrzaliznytsia”, the prompt actions of the train crew and the timely evacuation of people.
Heorhiy Reshetilov called the deliberate attack on civilian passenger transport another war crime by Russia.
“We must state unequivocally: a deliberate strike on a civilian passenger train is another war crime. Russia deliberately strikes where civilians are located. At passenger trains, residential buildings, our towns and villages. This is systematic terror against people.”
After receiving information about the first strike, the relevant units of the Mykolaiv Regional Military Administration and the Bashtanka district military administration together with the services of “Ukrzaliznytsia” organized the onward transportation of 168 passengers to Mykolaiv. Rescuers from the State Emergency Service (DSNS) and local self-government bodies were also involved.
The evacuation was complicated by new attacks by Russian UAVs, so all actions were carried out taking into account the current security situation. As the Regional Military Administration emphasized, it was coordination between the services and following instructions that made it possible to avoid tragic consequences.
During the two and a half hours after the first strike, Russian forces carried out another two attacks on the same passenger train. No one was injured as a result of them either. In total, the train No.122 Kyiv – Mykolaiv was targeted by the Russians three times.
According to rescuers, after one of the impacts in the Bashtanka district a fire broke out. The fire covered a small area and was extinguished quickly. Transport was also arranged for the evacuated passengers to take them to a safe place.
As a result of the attack, debris damaged an overhead power line. Power was cut to 18 settlements – a total of 3,628 subscribers. Energy workers began restoring the power supply.
As of the morning, the official service of “Ukrzaliznytsia” showed a significant delay for train No.121/122 Kyiv-Pasazhyrskyi – Mykolaiv-Pasazhyrskyi following the events on the route.
This is not the first case of targeted attacks by Russian drones on rail transport passing through Mykolaiv region. On 25 August 2026 a Russian UAV hit a suburban train Mykolaiv – Dolynska. Then the monitoring team of “Ukrzaliznytsia” also warned the crew in time, and 70 passengers managed to evacuate before the strike.
