Games at the South Pole: chess players will attempt to set a world record

In January 2027, six chess players representing different continents are scheduled to play a tournament in Antarctica and at the geographic South Pole. Organizers aim to set a world record for the southernmost chess tournament in history.

The competition is being promoted as the geographically most extreme chess tournament. ‘Hromadske’ wrote about the event’s preparation, citing the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

A rapid chess format is proposed for the tournament. All games are planned to be broadcast. The first rounds will take place on Antarctic ice, and the final stage will be played by the participants directly at the geographic South Pole.

The planned tournament’s participants include:

• Grandmaster Nigel Short from England;
• Candidate Master Aung Kyaw Mo from Myanmar;
• Woman International Master Jessie February from South Africa;
• FIDE Master Sean Press from Papua — New Guinea;
• Candidate Master Tris-Ann Richards from Saint Lucia;
• FIDE Master Damaris Abarca Gonzales from Chile.
