Two years of work: how Mykolaiv's wastewater treatment facilities are being modernized

The second phase of the reconstruction of the city’s treatment facilities has begun at the municipal enterprise “Mykolaivvodokanal”. Preparatory and initial dismantling works are currently underway at the site. Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych, together with the company’s director Gennadiy Izyumov, water utility employees and a contractor representative inspected the site.

The project “Development of the water supply and wastewater systems in the city of Mykolaiv” was launched back in 2016. Its first phase was completed in 2018. The contract for the second phase was signed in February 2025. Currently the contractor:

• is finalizing the design and engineering documentation;
• is setting up the construction camp;
• is carrying out the initial dismantling works.

The second stage provides for a complete reconstruction of the biological wastewater treatment units, as well as the introduction of a new system for sludge dewatering and stabilization. After completion, nearly the entire main technological cycle of municipal wastewater treatment will be modernized. This is expected to improve the reliability of the enterprise’s operations and ensure the required treatment quality in accordance with environmental protection standards.

“After the reconstruction is completed, the treatment facilities will operate on more modern and significantly more energy-efficient equipment,” — reported Mayor Oleksandr Senkevych.

Demolished concrete structures are not taken to a landfill. They are crushed and processed into crushed stone directly on the construction site. The resulting material is used to arrange temporary access roads within the site.

“The material gets a second life right on site,” — noted Oleksandr Senkevych.

The installation of modern, energy-efficient equipment should help the enterprise reduce electricity consumption and lower operating costs for technological processes. Implementation of the second phase of reconstruction will take about two years.

After the current works are completed the city plans to move to the third stage. It provides for additional treatment of wastewater to a level that will allow its reuse, in particular for agricultural purposes.

The project is being implemented in cooperation with European partners with funding from the European Investment Bank.

“Even during the war we must think not only about how the city operates today, but also about what it will be like in years to come,” — the mayor emphasized.
